Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As we enter the new year, January 2026 marks a significant month for business tax obligations. Planning ahead can streamline compliance tasks and help avoid penalties, keeping your business operations smooth and stress-free.

January 15 - Monthly Employer Deposits Due

If your business is subject to the monthly deposit rule, mark January 15 as the deadline to submit your December 2025 deposits for Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes. Additionally, December’s nonpayroll withholding deposits are due on this date under the same rule. Remember, all employment tax deposits must be filed electronically unless your liability is under $2,500 per return period, in which case you may have the option to pay quarterly or with the return annually.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen
Farmers and fishermen must pay their estimated taxes for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by this date. To avoid an estimated tax penalty, ensure that your tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) for 2025 is filed by April 15. Alternatively, filing your 2025 return and any tax owed by March 2, 2026, will waive your penalty if the January estimated tax payment is missed.

Adjustments for Weekends & Holidays

In cases where a tax deadline lands on a weekend or legal holiday, the due date is automatically extended to the following business day that isn't a legal holiday.
